Trauma Nurse Course Day 1 - 6/1/2026

Trauma System and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services Overview
8:00AM - 8:30AM


The PTSF standards, levels of trauma centers and accreditation process will be reviewed from site of injury throughout the continuum of care.

Objectives:
  • Describe the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) and its standards and accreditation process.
  • Describe how institution-specific practices relate to the PTSF standards requirements.
  • Describe the integration of pre-hospital care into the continuum of total trauma patient care.
Trauma Assessment and Kinematics of Trauma including Bariatric Considerations
8:30AM - 10:00AM


Mechanisms of injury related to the bio kinematics of trauma  will be discussed and prioritized nursing assessment and early management throughout the continuum of care will be presented.

Objectives:
  • Define predictable clinical manifestations relative to mechanism of injury.
  • Describe a systemic plan for completing a nursing assessment following multi-system trauma.
BREAK
10:00AM - 10:15AM

Shock
10:15AM - 11:00AM


Various types and classification of shock will be presented.  Management of the type and class of shock will be reviewed with interactive questions.

 



Objectives:
  • Identify types of shock, including the mechanism of compensatory, non-compensatory, and irreversible shock.
  • Apply nursing principles to the management and treatment of shock in the injured patient.
Substance Abuse in the Trauma Patient and Evidence Preservation
11:00AM - 11:30AM


Classification of substances and general management of the Intoxicated trauma patients will be discussed.  CWAR and RASS nursing assessment will be reviewed. Substance Abuse counseling for the care of the trauma patient will be presented Preservation of evidence forensic aspects for the traumatically injured patient will be presented.

 



Objectives:
  • Identify interventions necessary to manage a trauma patient under the influence of intoxicants.
  • List nursing interventions that preserve evidence in the trauma patient.
LUNCH
11:30AM - 12:00PM

Integumentary and Soft Tissue Trauma
12:00PM - 1:00PM


The Etiology and severity of a burn patient will be reviewed based upon American Burn Association guidelines.   Methods to calculate the Total body surface area and fluid resuscitation will be discussed based upon mechanism of burn tissue trauma. Differentiation of the pathophysiological response to burn injury in the adult, geriatric and pediatric population will be covered. Thermoregulation will be discussed in relation to the pathophysiology of burn tissue trauma.  Current advances in burn wound management from the acute stage of injury through scar tissue formation and remediation will be discussed and covered. Interactive cases will be utilize for TBSA and fluid calculations.



Objectives:
  • Describe the management of the burn injured patient by the interdisciplinary trauma team.

 

Considerations for Organ Donations and Procurement
1:00PM - 1:30PM


Organ donation and Procurement will be presented and case studies of organ donation will be discussed.  Identification and communications process of Organ or tissue donors will be reviewed.

Objectives:
  • Describe the clinical examination, apnea testing and confirmatory tests for identifying brain death.
  • Describe the optimal family approach process, incorporating three important factors that influence consent.
  • Determine the appropriate process and timing to be used for making organ and tissue donation.
Anesthetics
1:30PM - 2:30PM


Management of the Trauma patient who requires anesthesia and how the trauma nurse can assist the Anesthesiologist of CRNA will be reviewed.  Considerations for Sedations and Neuromuscular blockade will also be discussed.

Objectives:
  • Identify the trauma patient’s response to anesthetic agents in relation to the injury and to operative management.
  • Describe 2 nursing interventions that would assist the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist in the conscious sedation procedure.
Post Anesthesia Recovery Phase for Traumatically Injured Patients
2:30PM - 3:00PM


The Post Anesthesia recovery phase for traumatically injuring patient will be reviewed.  Complications of Anesthesia such as Malignant Hyperthermia will be presented with Nursing interventions to complete.

Objectives:

Relate nursing responsibilities and management for the trauma patient in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

Identify 2 post-anesthesia complications and describe the appropriate action for each complication in a trauma patient.

Pediatric Abuse Trauma and Child Maltreatment and Neglect and Human Trafficking and legal issues
3:00PM - 4:00PM


Abuse of pediatric and human trafficking will be discussed.  Polling questions for the participants’ knowledge of various types of pediatric abuse will be completed via chat box. Nursing interventions and screening tools will be identified. A plan of care for the pediatric patient, and their family throughout the continuum will be presented.    Pediatric legal Issues including pediatric abuse reporting, documentation and utilization of Child life for pediatric patients, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial issues will be discussed.



Objectives:
  • Define 5 forms of maltreatment.
  • Identify screening and reporting responsibilities in abuse situations.
  • Discuss pediatric legal issues that occur in a pediatric trauma patient.
  • List elements and injury patterns of pediatric human trafficking.
Abuse Across the Lifespan: Elder Abuse, Domestic Violence, Human Trafficking, Sexual Assault Plan of Care for the Patient, Family throughout the Continuum: Spiritual, Cultural, Psychosocial issues will be discussed.
4:00PM - 4:30PM


Abuse of Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric, Human trafficking, and Intimate Partner violence will be discussed The Plan of care for the Patient, Family throughout the continuum with assessment and interventions will be presented.  Communications for immediate care and follow-up will be discussed.

Objectives:
  • Describe components of crisis intervention for the patient, family and caregiver.
  • List elements and injury patterns of domestic violence and human trafficking
