This educational activity focuses on the nursing management of patients undergoing oncology care with complex treatment modalities including chemotherapy, biologic agents, and immunotherapy. Presented in a case study format, the course details the nurse’s role in administering treatments for Non-Small Cell Lung cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Pancreatic cancer, and Ovarian cancer, as well as Immunotherapy and Immune related adverse events. In each case study the Oncology Nursing Society and LVHN policies and clinical practice guidelines related to these complex therapies, with their implications for nursing practice, are explored. Recognition of adverse events and symptoms of complications are stressed. Each treatment modality is presented with its unique characteristics and administration techniques to equip the nurse new to oncology with essential concepts. The experienced oncology nurse will receive informative updates that will support oncology nursing practice.

1. Discuss one potential side effect of chemotherapy.
2. Explain two nursing interventions for the patient experiencing an infusion-related reaction.
3. Describe two physiologic effects of diarrhea in the oncology patient.
4. Summarize the rationale for chemotherapy use in ovarian cancer.
5. Discuss two teaching points the nurse should include in patient education regarding immune-related adverse events.
6. Evaluate learned concepts.

Lehigh Valley Health Network is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Completion Criteria: Registered Nurses attending the entire program will receive 7 Contact Hour(s).
