Inhalation Injury and Ventilatory Management of the Burn Patient

The session will include a detailed presentation on the pathophysiology of inhalation injuries and their pulmonary management. It will cover the complications associated with inhalation injuries and the corresponding nursing management strategies. This comprehensive approach ensures that learners are well-equipped to handle the complexities of inhalation injuries in burn patients, enhancing their ability to provide effective and informed care.

Objectives:
Discuss inhalation injury and ventilatory management of the burn patient
Etiology and Severity of Burn/Tissue Trauma Including Chemical & Electrical Burns

The session will review the etiology and severity of burn injuries according to the guidelines set forth by the American Burn Association. It will also cover methods for calculating the total body surface area (TBSA) affected by burns and discuss fluid resuscitation techniques based on the mechanism of burn tissue trauma. This comprehensive review ensures that participants are well-versed in the critical aspects of burn assessment and management, enabling them to provide high-quality care to burn patients.

Pathophysiology of Burn/Tissue Trauma Injury

The session will cover the differentiation of the pathophysiological response to burn injuries across adult, geriatric, and pediatric populations. This segment will highlight the unique physiological changes and challenges each age group faces when dealing with burn trauma. Additionally, the course will discuss thermoregulation in relation to the pathophysiology of burn tissue trauma, providing a comprehensive understanding of how body temperature regulation is affected by burn injuries and the implications for patient care. This detailed approach ensures that participants are equipped with the knowledge to manage burn patients effectively across different age groups.

1.Describe the pathophysiology of burn injury.

2. Discuss burn shock and fluid resuscitation in the burn injured patient.
Nursing Management of the Burn Wound from Injury to Healing
11:15AM - 12:15PM


The session will comprehensively cover current advances in burn wound management, addressing the entire continuum from the acute stage of injury through to scar tissue formation and remediation. This will include the latest techniques and treatments that enhance healing outcomes and minimize complications. By staying informed about these advancements, participants will be well-prepared to provide cutting-edge care to burn patients throughout their recovery journey.

Caring for the Pediatric Burn Patient

The session will address the unique challenges and age-specific issues involved in caring for pediatric burn tissue trauma patients. It will incorporate guidelines from both the American Burn Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics to ensure comprehensive and effective nursing management. This segment will provide participants with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to address the distinct needs of pediatric burn patients, ensuring they receive the highest standard of care.

Discuss the burn care assessment and management for the pediatric patient population.

1:45PM - 2:00PM


Surgical treatment options and post op care will be covered for the burn tissue trauma patient. Samples of when to worry when to communicate burn care management questions to the burn care team providers will be answered.  

Objectives:

Discuss preparation for and nursing management after surgical care management of the burn wound from injury to healing.

                
Nutritional Requirements for Burn/Tissue Trauma Patients Across the Continuum of Care

The session will address the metabolic consequences and nutritional needs of burn tissue trauma patients, structured as a three-phase response to injury. This comprehensive discussion will cover the critical aspects of nutrition and metabolism throughout the different stages of burn recovery. Additionally, the course will emphasize the importance of consultation and communication with a registered dietitian, ensuring that participants understand how to collaborate effectively to optimize patient care and outcomes.

When to Worry When to Call for the burn patient
3:15PM - 3:45PM


The session will outline the priorities for contacting burn specialty team members when managing burn tissue trauma patients. This segment will provide clear guidelines on when and how to escalate care to ensure timely and effective intervention. Additionally, case examples will be presented to facilitate role-playing exercises, allowing participants to practice and refine their communication skills with the burn specialty team. This practical approach will help learners become more confident and proficient in coordinating care for burn patients.

List three key factors of patient assessment that require Burn Team management immediately.

Rehabilitation of the Burn/Tissue Trauma Patient and Workshop
3:45PM - 4:15PM


The session will discuss the vital roles of occupational therapists and physical therapists in managing patients with burn tissue trauma throughout the continuum of care. These professionals play a crucial part in the rehabilitation process, helping patients regain functionality and improve their quality of life.

Additionally, the course will cover scar management and preservation techniques aimed at maintaining and enhancing functional status. This comprehensive approach ensures that participants understand the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the effective treatment and recovery of burn patients.
