Oncology Core Course - Day 3 - 11/03/2026

This educational activity provides the nurse with a comprehensive description of oncology care, including commonly occurring cancers such as lung, prostate, breast and colorectal, as well as the hematologic malignancies, leukemia, and lymphoma and gynecologic cancers. The pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and nursing care for each disease are discussed. Pharmacologic treatment agents, nutritional needs, psychosocial support, oncologic emergencies, are presented by subject matter experts who educate with an emphasis on the nurses’ role in delivering new and emerging therapies, recognizing, and reporting adverse events and acting as a patient advocate for optimal caregiving outcomes.

1. Discuss two potential quality of life issues associated with a gynecologic malignancy.
2. Compare the principles of aggressive treatment with comfort care and relief of symptom burden in the end-of -life setting.
3. Identify three oncology emergencies and one nursing consideration for each.
4. Identify two sources of pain and specific word descriptors for each.
5. Discuss two side effects associated with cancer treatment and one nursing management strategy for each.
6. Identify one late effect associated with cancer treatment.

Lehigh Valley Health Network is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Completion Criteria: Registered Nurses attending the entire program will receive 0.00 Contact Hour(s).
