ANCC Nursing Continuing Professional Development (4.00 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (4.00 hours)

Expanded clinical competency for the Emergency Department nurse responding as the bedside nurse in the trauma bay, emphasizing critical competencies in medication management, interdisciplinary team dynamics, effective communication, trauma-related pathophysiology, equipment operation, troubleshooting, and advanced resuscitation practices.

Emergency Department nurses receive the Department of Education's ED Nursing Trauma Program as part of their critical care nurse residency. However, there is typically a gap of up to one year between completing this initial training and being offered further education to provide direct care in the trauma bay. While specialized trauma management courses such as ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses) or TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) exist, they are not routinely attended by nurses prior to their trauma bay assignment, resulting in a delay in skill acquisition and readiness.

The size and operational flow of the ED Critical Care (ED-CC) area introduces additional challenges to consistent clinical exposure to high-acuity patients. These issues are particularly evident in the functioning of the critical care pod, where nursing assignments—based on location or shift timing—may result in limited opportunities for nurses to engage with critically ill patients. Effective response to critical events requires targeted training in equipment use, pathophysiology, logistical coordination, documentation standards, and clearly defined team roles. Without consistent exposure and structured education, nurses may face gaps in readiness and confidence when managing emergent situations.

Lehigh Valley Health Network is accredited by the Pennsylvania Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
