Oncology Core Course - Day 1

Occurs every 3 months on the last Thursday starting on 1/1/2026 at 8:00 AM

This educational activity provides the nurse with a comprehensive description of oncology care, including commonly occurring cancers such as lung, prostate, breast and colorectal, as well as the hematologic malignancies, leukemia, and lymphoma and gynecologic cancers. The pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and nursing care for each disease are discussed. Pharmacologic treatment agents, nutritional needs, psychosocial support, oncologic emergencies, are presented by subject matter experts who educate with an emphasis on the nurses’ role in delivering new and emerging therapies, recognizing, and reporting adverse events and acting as a patient advocate for optimal caregiving outcomes.

1. Discuss cellular kinetics and the process of carcinogenesis
2. Identify the three most prevalent cancers in men and women
3. Identify two hereditary cancer syndromes and potential medical management implications
4. Describe the role of the Gleason Score in determining prostate cancer treatment
5. Discuss three key components utilized in developing a treatment plan
6. Describe one quality of life implication associated with a diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer
7. Explain one principle of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
8. Verbalize two examples in which nutrition impacts health outcomes in the oncology patient

Lehigh Valley Health Network is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Completion Criteria: Registered Nurses attending the entire program will receive 0.00 Contact Hour(s).
