Oncology Core Course - Day 2

This educational activity provides the nurse with a comprehensive description of oncology care, including commonly occurring cancers such as lung, prostate, breast and colorectal, as well as the hematologic malignancies, leukemia, and lymphoma and gynecologic cancers. The pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and nursing care for each disease are discussed. Pharmacologic treatment agents, nutritional needs, psychosocial support, oncologic emergencies, are presented by subject matter experts who educate with an emphasis on the nurses’ role in delivering new and emerging therapies, recognizing, and reporting adverse events and acting as a patient advocate for optimal caregiving outcomes.

1. Identify two antineoplastic agents and two support medications used to treat cancer.
2. Describe three different classifications of medications utilized to manage symptoms and improve quality of life in persons with cancer.
3. Describe one treatment consideration for the use of targeted therapy in lung cancer.
4. Describe two modalities of treatment used for the management of persons with colon cancer.
5. Explain one principle for chemotherapy use in the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.
6. Describe three treatment modalities used in the management of the patient with Melanoma.
7. Discuss the role of the nurse in identifying and supporting patient needs related to psychosocial, spiritual and sexuality concerns associated with a cancer diagnosis.

Lehigh Valley Health Network is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Completion Criteria: Registered Nurses attending the entire program will receive 0.00 Contact Hour(s).
